We were going to have a picnic at Talyllyn, but the weather looked so threatening… I walked right up to the stone bridge over the Eden and fished up a long way with small flies. I caught a good many trout, and as the river became gradually discoloured I put larger flies and fished the best of the lower pools. I caught two fine sewin… Trout (Eden) 49 Sea Trout 2 (1) 3lb (1) 2lb 7oz

We were going to have a picnic at Talyllyn, but the weather was simply abominable, and we soon came home again and it is fortunate we did as heavy rain came on. We drove to Tyn-y-groes, and I went to the Eden, and it was not long before that river came down in flood, but the Mawddach was not down till much later, and then it was one of the dirtiest floods I had seen for a long time. I tried the Eden with worm without avail, and finished up at Gethigemlyn: but the Sewin would not bite at all. I walked home by llanelltydd and Garthmaelaw.

The river was in excellent order, but the fish took badly, and I lost several sewin. I fished right up to the Falls, but rose nothing till I came to the pool where I caught the grisle the other day: here I rose a fine Salmon to the Black and Yellow: and eventually hooked him on a double hooked Durham Ranger he gave me half an hours exciting sport, and John Davies landed him beautifully. Salmon 1 12lbs Durham Ranger Mawddach Sea Trout 2.

Went on to Tyn y Groes owing to continual rain, the river was very high, but a splendid colour for fly. We tried up the Eden first but found it too high, and so we went off to the falls. At the first long pool Wynne caught six lb Sewin and at 1:30 I hooked a Salmon of quite 15lbs in the mine Pool, having risen him first to a Durham Ranger. I was all alone for the first half hour, and then Wynne joined me: and we had great hopes of killing the fish: but after an hours exciting play he got off in a very rough place. We tried the Eden again, and I caught another 2lb’er at the bridge pool. We then returned to Tyn-y-Groes had some tea, and tried some of the lower pools, but Wynne also rose a fish. WE and CME Sea Trout (Eden) 2 (1) 2 ¼ lbs (1) 2 lbs Sea Trout (Mawddach) (1) 6 lbs.

I went out fishing the Wnion… but although I rose one or two Sewin, I caught nothing. Wynne and I went over to the Mawddach, which we found in good order, but we had no luck. We fished up to the falls and Wynne rose a Salmon twice, but did not hook him: it was in the first long pool in the wood. I walked home across the hill.

A very wet morning, and it seemed almost impossible for us to shoot… Wynne and I went out fishing… and I went to the ford: the river being in good order for worm. I caught one Sewin and some river trout… It cleared up in the afternoon and we had a pleasant three hours shooting, the birds lying well. Still more rain, which brought the rivers down in high flood. We did not go to the Mawddach, as there was too much rain… I began at the Ford and fished right up to the Bont Rhidge: I caught three Sewin with worm, and took to a fly in the afternoon, and caught a splendid Sewin at the tail end of Llyn Goch with the Durham Ranger. Sea Trout (Wnion) 4 (1) 3 ¼ lbs. W.E caught Sea Trout 1 Trout 25.

I went out fishing on the Wnion… and caught a Sewin in the pool in the Hollow, loosing another there… I drove up to Drws Y Nant with Smith, and we had a very pleasant days sport. [Scent?] was not good, nor were birds plentiful but Dover and bess worked splendidly, and powder was straight… Sea Trout (Wnion) 1 Guns 2 Hengwrt Drws y Nant, C.M.E & W.M Smith killed Grouse 14.

Wynne and I went up to Drws y Nant, Ch.Owen joining us, and we went to shoot on cae Coch. We found two Covey but they were awfully wild, and we had not a chance of killing a bird… Wynne and I each killed a bird, but we saw very few. Saturday August 10th A very wet morning, so much so that I went out on the river early; but the rain made no perceptible difference on the river. I had to go down to the Board of Guardians at 11 o`clock and was kept there till 2: ...... after lunch Wynne, Pryce, and I went out fishing, there being about a foot of water down. I finished up to the Viaduct, and killed 34 nice trout. Wynne 40 and Pryse 11. The trout rose very well sometimes, and I rose a Sewin in the Ford pool, and Wynne also rose two. Wednesday August 14th Weather worse than ever, so we returned home as I had telegraphed for the carriage fetch us. Wynne, Green Price, Banbury and I went over to the Mawddach about 12. We began fishing at Llanelltydd [sic] and fished up. The river was in first rate order, but fish rose badly. Friday August 16th Wright and I with John Davies went over to the Mawddach. It was a showery day, but river was low. Friday August 23rd A pourinf wet morning.... left Knighton... reached Dolserau by the 6 o`clock train....
Saturday August 24th I had breakfast at 7.30, feeling refreshed after a tub and drove over to Tyn y groes in the cart and [`Trim`]. River in fair order, but of course falling rapidly. I fished up to "Meeting of the Waters" by lunchtime, and caught 3 Sewin, but had no sport at all in the afternoon, although I tried the Eden with small flies; and some good pools in the Mawddach afterwards. Sunday September 1st A fine though dull day. Went to Church this morning
Saturday September 7th A misty, dull day which turned to rain in the afternoon. Wright and I started with Kinsey to shoot Cors y garnedd. We had a hard mornings work beating the scrub, and not having a shot, only seeing one hare. Besides I beat all the top part of the mountain, on the chance of seeing some grouse. However after lunch we came on a very good covey of partridges, out of which we killed 3 birds. But afterwards as the weather got so bad we could not find them again. We got home about 5.30, and I went out on the river, which was very low, but I saw two sewin follow my fly in the Ford Pool. Cors y garnedd Guns 2 Partridges 3 Hares 2

Friday 27th June 1879 Having slept at Corwen, overnight, I started by early train at 7 reaching Dolserau at 8.15. Heavy rain during the night, and weather very stormy and unsettled. After breakfast drove over to Mawddach, and commenced fishing at Gethi gemlyn [sic Gelli gemlyn] . Fished the best pools up to Tyn y groes without seeing a Sewin; meeting Col. Romer who said a great many salmon had run up. I walked up to Meeting of waters and tried the upper pools. Did not stir a fish, and walked home across the hill in pouring rain Blank [= dim pysgod]

Tuesday 1st July 1879 The weather made me alter my plans, as fishing mountain lakes this sort of weather is a farce. So I took the 12.10 train to Dolgelley, and walking back to Dolserau, I lost no time in being on the river which had been in very high flood. By the time I commenced fishing it was just clear enough for fly, this was about 3 o`clock. Fished between Llyn Coch and Dolgun, and only saw one decent fish (I think a sewin) in the Ford Pool. July Saturday 5th Was on the river by 8: and tried the pools which I thought likely up to the Meeting of the Waters, and then went up the Mawddach. I rose a salmon in the [Gut] pool, but I could not get him to come again: he was a large fish. It turned out a very sulky [sultry] day: and I tried right up to the Falls, and most of the pools to Tyn y groes. Gave up soon after 5: rather tired, and drove home. Sewin would not rise at all. Tuesday 8th July Heavy rain fell during the night, and I got up early and went out on Wnion, but although the river was in worm order, it was clearing rapidly. After breakfast I determined to stick to the Wnion, and I was glad I did. I captured the smaller of the two fish at the big Rock opposite [Pugh`] of Dolserau`s farm. I fished some way up going to Bont Rhayadr, but it was not till I came down to the pool in the hollow that I stuck in a good fish: a 4lb grilse, perfectly fresh run. Charlie Owen came up this afternoon to play lawn tennis, but of course owing to weather it was out of the question. He stayed the night

Tuesday 22nd July River in good order. I had half a mind to go up to the Black pools this morning, but as there was apparently no wind, I gave the idea up, and so 8 o`clock saw me commence fishing on Mawddach. It turned out and uneventful day for I only met one Sewin, although I went right up to the Falls, and then walked over the hill, crossing the Caine [sic. Cain] to the Eden, which I fished down to the Ganllwyd bridge with small flies. Returned to Tyn y groes, and the Squire met me in the cart.

Wednesday 23rd July After breakfast at 9:30 this morning, I commenced fishing on Wnion., Beginning at Dolgun and fishing all the best pools up, hoping to get some Sewin. I hooked a fine fish in the crooked pool (of course, on a trout fly) and lost him after a good fight. Fishing up to Bontnewydd, I had no sport so in the afternoon went up to Llyn Cynwych which was no good, wind being strong and rather cold. Coming down again to the Ford, I hooked another Sewin, which broke the barbs of my fly. Really bad luck. Millais was on the river, and I gave the few trout a caught to him. Wnion Trout 8
